CONCLUSIONS

PIKE RUN AREA HOME

CONCLUSIONS LOWER PIKE RUN

Water in the Lower Pike Run sub basin is of good quality.

The abandoned mines in the area do not seem to be having a negative impact within the watershed

The Lower Pike Run seems to be a healthy habitat for aquatic life.

The water quality is acceptable for a stream designated as TSF (Trout Stocked Fishes).

Continued Study

Visual, chemical and biological testing should continue in the area.

Chemical samples should be sent to a lab to verify the results.

Chemical samples should be taken during every season to track variations in chemical concentrations throughout the year.

CONCLUSIONS UPPER PIKE RUN

We could not get re-producible results with the LaMotte Kits.

For example, for DO, the same site at the same time would get 0 mg/L and 30 mg/L.  Zero might be reasonable since fall decay was underway, but un-producible results makes things unreliable.  The same was true with Iron.

For future studies it is recommended to send out for further testing to an analytical laboratory.

for Iron and to test for DO.

Overall upper part of the stream seems to be in good shape.

Further testing is recommended to analyze more possible alkaline mine drainage.  (Iron concentrations, calcium, magnesium, etc.)

Continued monitoring and testing to occur during all season so accurate seasonal concentrations can be measured.

Meet with the Township to plan a stream cleanup day and to try to stop trash dumping.

THIS WATERSHED WAS ASSESSED BY TWO TEAMS OF STUDENTS.
