Our Region

Using the Appalachian Regional Commission's definition of the region, Northern Appalachia includes counties located in regions within five states: the northern panhandle of West Virginia, northwest Maryland, eastern Ohio, the Southern Tier of New York, and much of Pennsylvania. Like the rest of Appalachia, the northern part of the region has a rich history, as well as vibrant cultural and environmental assets. It is also a region that has faced and continues to face challenges related to its assets. Early gas and oil exploration, logging, coal mining, steelmaking and other industrial development, and the latest horizontal drilling gas boom have all , in their time, generated wealth, provided much needed employment and community development, and created challenges to the protection of the region's beautiful environment.
