Trypanosoma lewisi from the laboratory rat. This is a
longitudinal section near the posterior end. The prominent structure in
the center is the kinetoplast which gives rise to the chrondriome, a
mitochondrial complex. Some cristae can be seen inside to the left.
To the right, can be seen two elongate structures which represents the kinetosome (cut
longitudinally), revealing the outer microtubules. The vacuole seen to the
right is the flagellar reservoir or pocket from which the flagellum emerges and
becomes the undulating membrane as it passes anteriorly along the cell.
The gray profiles to the upper left and lower right are red blood cells from the
