It is widespread throughout northern Africa, central and southwest Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Central and South America  infecting a wide variety of hoofed animals, dogs, and also elephants.  The disease is often called surra and is NOT transmitted by tsetse flies but instead mechanically by the bite of flies, such as tabaniids.  In South America,  it causes murrina and can be transmitted mechanically by the bite of vampire bats.  1000x
