bladderworm or cysticercus of Taenia solium.  The scolex can be seen as the tri-part structure in the center of field.  This is a tissue section in which a small amount of skeletal muscle can be seen at the upper margin of the image.  The upper part of the scolex has sections through the rostellum, thus enabling this to be identified as Taenia spp40x

section through tissue infected with a bladderworm or cysticercus of Taenia solium. The multi-branch structure is the interior of the fluid-filled bladder.  Skeletal muscle can be seen to the upper right and lower right. Ingestion of the egg capsules of this tapeworm by humans leads to dire consequences, when the cysticerci develop in the definitive host, often in the brain or eyes.  The condition is known as cysticercosis.  40x
